Transmigration穿越

chuānyuè

Waking up in another world or another body, often in a novel the character has read; China's homegrown parallel to isekai.

Chuanyue ("crossing over") predates the Japanese isekai boom and comes in flavors the fandom distinguishes carefully: crossing into the past (historical transmigration), into a book the character has read (making foreknowledge the golden finger), into a villain or cannon-fodder character whose fate must be dodged, or full rebirth (chongsheng) into one's own younger self with memories intact.

Regulators have periodically discouraged time-travel plots in live-action drama, which nudged the trope's wildest forms into web novels, manhua, and donghua. Its fingerprints are all over the medium, from prestige danmei adaptations (the protagonist of the Scum Villain novels transmigrates into a trashy xianxia webnovel) to comedies that treat waking up in a cultivation world as an HR problem.
