Luo Xiaohei is a small black cat spirit taken in by a girl named Luo Xiaobai. Between naps, snacks, and household mischief, the cat drifts into a hidden world of spirits, immortal officials, and monster hunters living alongside ordinary people. Episode by episode, the questions surrounding where spirits belong in a human-dominated world grow much larger than Xiaohei's kitten-sized body.

The web series is created, written, and directed by the artist MTJJ, with animation by studio HMCH (Hanmu Chunhua), and has been released at an unhurried pace since March 17, 2011, officially hosted on bilibili. Forty episodes plus bonus shorts had aired by July 2021, when episode 40 closed the Door of All Beings arc; MTJJ then paused regular updates so the team could produce the franchise's second feature film. The property spun off the prequel film The Legend of Hei (2019), a sequel film released in 2025, and the manhua Lanxi Zhen. As of mid 2026 no new episodes had aired since 2021, though the series has never been declared concluded.
