With Tibetan armies pressing toward the capital and his own conduct under review, the aging general and poet Gao Shi answers an imperial envoy's questions by recounting his lifelong bond with Li Bai. Their story runs from a chance meeting as ambitious young men through failed examinations, court favor and disgrace, and the An Lushan rebellion, threading dozens of Tang poems through a changing empire.

Chang An, also released as 30,000 Miles from Chang'an, opened Light Chaser Animation's New Culture series, turning the studio from mythology toward Chinese history and literature under directors Xie Junwei and Zou Jing. Released on July 8, 2023, the 168-minute film ranks among the longest theatrical animated features ever made and recites 48 classical poems on screen. It grossed about 1.82 billion yuan, roughly $250 million worldwide, which made it the second-highest-grossing Chinese animated film at the time, behind only Ne Zha. The film received a limited North American theatrical release on October 6, 2023, and its domestic success reinforced Light Chaser's position alongside Enlight as a leading Chinese animation producer.
