White Snake: Afloat closes the trilogy Light Chaser Animation began in 2019, this time directed by Chen Jianxi and Li Jiakai. Released in China on August 10, 2024 to coincide with the Qixi festival, it retells the traditional legend directly, in contrast to the prequel and afterlife angles of the earlier films, and grossed about 424 million yuan, roughly $60 million, during a run extended into November. Xinhua coverage presented the film as a reshaping of the classic romance for the holiday audience. Unlike its predecessors, which had GKIDS and Netflix deals, no wide North American theatrical or streaming release had been confirmed, though the studio said overseas distribution discussions were underway.
