Light Chaser Animation followed White Snake with this direct sequel, released in Chinese theaters on July 23, 2021 with Amp Wong directing solo. It trades period fantasy for a wasteland purgatory that layers modern ruins, motorcycles, and Buddhist imagery over the Legend of the White Snake characters, with Alibaba Pictures, Maoyan, and Bilibili among its backers. The film topped the Chinese box office on release and finished with roughly $90 million, almost entirely from the domestic market. Netflix acquired rights outside China and began streaming it on December 1, 2021 under the title White Snake 2: The Tribulation of the Green Snake, giving the studio its second global Netflix release that year after New Gods: Nezha Reborn.
