Donghua动画

dònghuà

The Chinese word for animation; outside China it has come to mean Chinese animation specifically, the way anime means Japanese animation.

Inside China, donghua covers all animation regardless of origin: a Pixar film, a Ghibli film, and a Tencent cultivation series are all donghua. English-speaking fans borrowed the word to fill a gap, and in international usage it now refers specifically to animation made in China, parallel to how anime and aeni are used for Japan and Korea.

The industry it describes is distinctive: heavily web-novel driven, split between 3DCG series built for year-round weekly release and a smaller 2D wing with a strong auteur streak, and distributed through streaming platforms (Tencent Video, bilibili, iQIYI, Youku) rather than television. See guoman for the related term used inside China for domestic animation and comics.
