Manhua漫画

mànhuà

Chinese comics; the counterpart to Japanese manga and Korean manhwa, and a major source of donghua adaptations.

Manhua shares its characters with manga (漫画); the pronunciation differs by language. Modern Chinese comics are dominated by full-color webtoon-style vertical strips published on platforms such as Kuaikan and bilibili Comics, though the term also covers older print traditions, including the lianhuanhua picture books of the twentieth century.

For donghua, manhua matters as source material. Series such as The Outcast, Rakshasa Street, and White Cat Legend began as manhua, and the "dynamic manhua" format (lightly animated comic panels with voice acting) is a common low-budget stepping stone between a hit comic and a full animated adaptation.
