Face-Slapping打脸
dǎliǎn
The signature payoff of web novel fiction: an underestimated protagonist publicly proves scornful rivals wrong, "slapping the face" of everyone who mocked them.
Face (mianzi), meaning social standing and dignity, is the currency being destroyed. In a face-slapping scene the sneering young master, the dismissive elder, or the ex-fiancee's family watches the supposed trash they insulted reveal overwhelming talent, and the narrative lingers on their shock. The loop of insult, hidden growth, and public reversal can repeat indefinitely, which is part of why cultivation novels run to thousands of chapters.
Critics call it formula; fans call it the point. Donghua adaptations of Battle Through the Heavens ("three years, then look up to me" is the genre's most famous face-slapping promise) and Tales of Demons and Gods are built on the rhythm.
