If xianxia is fantasy written inside Daoist cosmology, xuanhuan is fantasy written with its toolbox: qi-like energy systems, staged power levels, sects and clans, but set in invented continents where the metaphysics answer to the author alone. Bloodline powers, battle spirits, elemental affinities, and academy tournaments are all fair game.
Most of the biggest 3DCG donghua are xuanhuan novel adaptations: Battle Through the Heavens, Soul Land, Martial Universe, and The Great Ruler all come from the same generation of Qidian-era web novels. The genre's rhythm of insult, training, and payback made face-slapping a household term among fans.
