Crown prince Xie Lian ascended to heaven eight hundred years ago, only to be banished twice. When he rises a third time as a penniless god with no worshippers, he pays off his heavenly debts by investigating strange disappearances in the mortal realm. On these cases he keeps crossing paths with Hua Cheng, a feared ghost king who, for reasons of his own, treats the shabby god as someone precious.

Produced by bilibili with animation by Haoliners Animation League and chief direction by Li Haoling, the series adapts Mo Xiang Tong Xiu's novel, which Seven Seas publishes in English. Season 1 (11 episodes plus a special) premiered in October 2020; season 2 (12 episodes) ran from October 2023 to January 2024. It became the first donghua licensed by Funimation, which simulcast season 1 and released an English dub in 2021; the show later reached Netflix and moved to Crunchyroll after the Funimation merger, with Aniplex handling the Japanese release. As of mid 2026 bilibili had not officially announced a third season, leaving season 2's cliffhanger unresolved.
