The adaptation of Mo Xiang Tong Xiu's web novel was produced by Tencent Penguin Pictures with animation by B.CMAY Pictures and direction by Xiong Ke. Three seasons aired on Tencent Video: Qian Chen (2018, 15 episodes), Xian Yun (2019, 8 episodes), and the concluding Wan Jie (2021, 12 episodes), finishing the story in 35 episodes. A 30 episode chibi spin-off, Mo Dao Zu Shi Q, ran from 2020 to 2021. Tencent released the series internationally through WeTV and its official YouTube channel with multilingual subtitles beginning in 2019. The same novel also produced the live action drama The Untamed, making the franchise one of the most visible danmei-derived properties.
