Danmei耽美

dānměi

Chinese male-male romance fiction, a web novel powerhouse whose animated adaptations reshaped donghua's international audience.

Danmei ("indulging in beauty", borrowed from Japanese tanbi) is written mostly by and for women and thrives on subscription platforms like JJWXC. Its landmark authors include Mo Xiang Tong Xiu, whose novels became Mo Dao Zu Shi and Heaven Official's Blessing, the two adaptations most responsible for donghua's danmei-driven global fandom wave.

On screen, regulation means the romance is adapted obliquely: explicit couples become devoted "soulmates" (the fandom term is socialist brotherhood, used with heavy irony), while glances, sacrifice, and color symbolism carry the subtext. The source novels' official English translations becoming bookstore bestsellers has made danmei one of China's most successful cultural exports regardless.
