Jiang Ziya was the second animated feature in Beijing Enlight's slate drawn from the Investiture of the Gods, arriving a year after Ne Zha, which had teased it in a post-credits scene, with Cheng Teng and Li Wei directing. Pushed from Chinese New Year to October 1, 2020 by the pandemic, it set an opening-day record for animated films in China during the National Day holiday and grossed about $243 million worldwide, among the year's biggest totals globally. Its somber tone drew a cooler audience response than Ne Zha's comedy. Well Go USA released it in North American theaters day-and-date, and it later streamed internationally on Netflix as Legend of Deification.
